Manchester, here we come!

We, the English LK students, had the joy of trading our desks for five days in the homeland of the language we study! On board with Mrs. Gaul and Mrs. Heidler’s incredible planning abilities, we embarked on a short journey to Manchester. Yes, the very same city known for being the heart of the Industrial Revolution, two renowned football teams, and a rich music scene.

Arriving in Manchester, we were thrown into the bustling streets of the city. Using a digital city rally on our phones, we took a quick glance at the many sights. A blend of architectural styles, pavement poems, and a myriad of global cuisines showed us the essence of Manchester: a city shaped by its diverse, creative, and hard-working people.

The next day, we escaped the metropolitan hustle to the healing scenery of the Peak District. A few sunlit hours in England’s breathtaking nature filled us with the same inspiration that once ran through the veins of Romantic-era poets.

On Wednesday, we reflected on the importance and the history of advocating for one’s rights. The People’s History Museum raised our awareness of the countless ways people have fought — and continue to fight — for the freedoms we enjoy today. In the evening, we saw a theatrical performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. We watched as the actors, a cast of only women and nonbinary individuals, transformed the classic play into a modern spectacle.

Once Thursday came, we split into two groups. One half visited the football stadium Old Trafford to learn more about Manchester United, while the other half appreciated art at The Lowry. When hunger crept up on us, we reunited for a delicious dinner at the Hard Rock Café.

Before our time in Manchester became a precious memory, we visited the historic John Rylands Library. Standing before the gothic architecture, we understood why it inspired the grand design of Harry Potter’s school Hogwarts. At last, it was time to fly back home to Berlin.

A big thank you to Mrs. Gaul and Mrs. Heidler for organizing and accompanying us on this wonderful trip!
